A journey beyond fantasy: selectability helping Nigel’s writing dreams
Consumer, Nigel’s new-found direction, with the support of the selectability’s services, has given him the chance to pursue his dream as of becoming a fantasy novelist.
The overwhelming thirst for the next surge of inspiration is an experience every creative mind struggles with on a daily basis.
For Nigel however, that inspiration has continued to chase him throughout his life. Whether it be through his passion for full metal – full contact medieval martial arts, or his hobby turned profession of fantasy fiction writing.
“I have always liked writing and world building, it’s something I feel compelled to pursue,” Nigel said.
Nigel’s love for farming gave him the perfect backdrop to explore his passions, eventually selling his farm in NSW and buying another block of land on the west coast of Tasmania.
Sadly, after a spinal injury in 2008, Nigel was forced to end his farming career, in 2018 turning his attention full time to writing.
“My book and medieval club association started after spinal surgery in 2009/2010 and formed part of my recovery process.
“But the ongoing deterioration of my health and nerve damage was what eventually ended my time sword fighting.
“I did get to enjoy being a part of a Hollywood film as an extra, partly shot in Tasmania in 2014 before my health and other changes took me away from the farm.”
In 2021, Nigel and his daughter moved to the Whitsundays in search of warmer weather and a new life, where he first heard about selectability and its services.
“With the help of a great medical team and support services including selectability, I turned my hobby into a full-time pursuit in the hopes it can become my career, I also regained direction with a positive change.
The results have shown with Nigel’s debut publication; fantasy fiction novel ‘Awakening’ which launched last month.
“I am really looking forward to beginning its release at the local library, at a date not too far in the future.
“I have already started my next book and have others waiting, I don't see the twelve years of writing and world building as hard work but a very satisfying interest.”
Settling into life in the Whitsundays, Nigel says the weather has helped a great deal with his chronic pain, and with the support of the available services, it’s a new beginning.
“It has been a long journey with great appreciation for those who helped along the way, I am very grateful to have the chance of an exciting new career and life, so hey, I am a writer now.
“I am currently working on my next book – Beyond the Darkest Shadows.”
