Are you eligible for the NDIS?
Looking to apply for support – for yourself or a family member – through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) but not sure if you are eligible?
To help you navigate through the NDIS eligibility we sat down with Saranne Maule Team Leader, Support Coordination. Saranne will talk you through what the NDIS is, NDIS eligibility, how to apply and what happens if your application is either approved or rejected.
What is the NDIS?
The NDIS – National Disability Insurance Scheme – is an Australian Government initiative that provides support to people with a permanent disability. The aim is to give more choice and control to those with a disability in regard to the support they receive.
NDIS eligibility
You may be eligible to receive support through the NDIS if you have a significant and permanent disability. Ultimately the decision is made by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) – the agency in charge of the NDIS. The NDIA assess every applicant’s situation on a case-by-case basis and make the decision if you will receive funding or not.
Here are some questions you can ask yourself if you are wondering if you may be eligible.
- Do you have a permanent disability?
- Do you require the support of another person or specialist equipment due to your disability?
- Are you aged between 0 and 65 years?
- Are you an Australian citizen living in Australia?
How to apply
Answered yes to the above questions? Then there is a good chance that you may be eligible for NDIS supports. You can apply over the phone or in writing.
- Call the NDIS on 1800 800 110
- Download and complete an Access Request Form then email enquiries@ndis.gov.au
What next?
That will depend on whether your application is either successful or not. If successful, an NDIS representative will contact you to advise you and arrange a planning meeting.
If unsuccessful, a lot of times applications are rejected because not enough quality evidence was provided. It must be recent and show the functional impact of your disability on day-to-day life. The more evidence the better! Don’t give up – gather some new evidence and apply again.
