Bike Shed giving back to the Mackay community

24 January 2022

Six lucky Mackay locals have become the proud owners of refurbished bicycles thanks to mental wellbeing not-for-profit selectability’s Bike Shed donation program launched in December.

The program invited locals to submit a short description of how they would benefit from having a bike.

selectability Mackay Care Navigator, Stacy Irwin said she was delighted that the Bike Shed was giving back to the community that had supported the organisation’s programs while helping locals to improve their mental wellbeing.

“The Mackay community has been fantastic in its support for the Bike Shed and other selectability programs - it's great that we can give something back,” said Stacy.

“The donation program has been made possible due to the hard work of Bike Shed members, the general public, local organisations and our team at selectability.

“Members worked tirelessly to refurbish the bikes, generously donated by individuals and local shop Corry's Cylces, to a near new standard.

“Bike riding is great for your mental wellbeing and it provides a the perfect way for people to get around and connect with their community.

Bike recipient, Stephen Moss , said exercise and getting out of the house were his reasons for applying to the program.

“The bike will help me to exercise and get outside instead of being stuck inside,” said Stephen.

“I’m also looking forward to joining a bike riders club and going on group rides.”

Stacy said that the program had been so successful that they would be running them throughout the year.

“Our members are working hard to keep up with the demand for refurbished bikes.

“Thanks to the generous donation of 30 bikes from The Incredible Tip Shop we will be able to run the program again.”

Other program recipients included Bronwyn Simpson, Steven Kyle and Alex Ellison. The two other recipient will be announced in the coming weeks.
