Caring for carers

Caring for carers

10 June 2021

The value of the support family and friends provide to loved ones living with mental illness shouldn’t be underestimated. According to a report by Mind Australia and the University of Queensland it would cost federal and state governments A$13.2 billion to provide the same level of support in the mental health service sector!

selectability understands that carers perform an essential role that is generally taken on with little support or training.

selectability Chief Operating Officer Aaron Farrell said it was important to recognise carers for the invaluable service they provided not only to their loved ones but to our communities.

“Carers play a vital role in the life of someone living with a disability and we acknowledge all carers for the incredible effort and love they show to others each and every day,” said Mr Farrell.

“As a carer it’s not unusual to feel overwhelmed at times so we need to make sure they maintain their health and wellbeing too and provide them with the supports to find their purpose, give them hope and reduce social isolation.

selectability’s focus is on providing services to ensure that carers have the emotional resilience to continue in their caring roles.”

As a Carer Gateway regional delivery partner selectability provides counselling and emergency respite services designed to improve capacity and provide carers with the tools, strategies and support to improve their wellbeing and participate socially and economically.

“We provide Carer Gateway services to all carers whether it is someone caring for a family member or friend with a disability, a medical or mental health condition or someone who is frail due to age.”

selectability is currently recruiting for a Carer Coordinator responsible for developing, leading and coordinating multiple programs, which will be co-designed to meet the needs of carers throughout regional Queensland.

This full time position based in Townsville will be required to substantially increase the number of programs referrals, stand up the carer coaching program and the in-person peer support service together with establishing respite programs.
