Celebrating the success of the Skilling Queenslanders for Work Program

Celebrating the success of the Skilling Queenslanders for Work Program

31 May 2024

Since its roll out almost a year ago, the Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) has been delivering remarkable outcomes for students across regional Queensland.

The program, which was successfully run in Mackay, Townsville, Ingham, Bowen, Charters Towers, Rockhampton, and Ayr has seen 53 students either fully complete a Certificate III in Community Services or receive a statement of attainment.

SQW, funded by the Department of Employment, Small Business, and Training (DESBT), aims to support disadvantaged or underutilised Queensland workers who face barriers to study, including financial constraints, disabilities, and learning challenges.

Last Friday we recognised the milestone with a series of morning teas in each location, where students, trainers, and mentors gathered to celebrate their achievements. Each student received their certificate or statement of attainment, along with a special certificate from DESBT.

The graduation celebration was made even more special through video calls that connected all locations, allowing the selectability Training team to thank everyone collectively for their dedication and celebrate their success.

The program spanned 3 rounds over the last 12 months, with 3 cohorts of students in each round. The initial 2 cohorts attended classes twice a week for 12 weeks, while the third cohort met three times a week for 9 weeks.

Seasoned instructor, Todd O’Donnell, delivered the training online. Despite the remote delivery, students were supported in person in the classroom style setting by lifestyle support worker mentors.

The completion of this version of the course marks a significant achievement for all involved. Graduates are encouraged to apply for jobs within community services organisations in their local areas, however we’re pleased to share a few students have already secured employment with selectability as lifestyle support workers.

Graduates can use their certificates to pursue further studies, such as a Diploma in Community Services.

Congratulations to all students for your hard work and perseverance. Your achievements are a testament to your dedication and the supportive environment fostered by the SQW program. We look forward to seeing you thrive in your careers, future studies and making a difference in our communities.
