Follow up: Townsville consumers celebrate completion of course with generous donation

22 August 2024

A few weeks ago, we highlighted the efforts of our consumers as they worked to complete their certificate I white card and complete a project for a good cause in the process.

Over 6 weeks, consumers from our Townsville Mental Health hub mastered woodwork and construction skills to build a coffee table, which has culminated in the final product being donated to a nonprofit of their choice.

Each table a demonstration of their skills, Amanda, Shane and Sharon place the final touches on their tables next week, donating them to the Heart Foundation, Act for Kids and Cancer Council.

Mental Health Hub Coordinator Jackie Inwood said she was immensely proud of the consumers and credited the opportunities that have arisen through selectability’s connection with LifeSkills Queensland.

“I think it has definitely given our consumers some great insight into the industry,” said Jackie.

“It is one of the benefits of the service we provide, consumers are encouraged to work in groups to promote socialisation, they receive transport to and from lessons, and can even potentially take on new employment as a result.

“And working through the Social Communities Grant program, the course was provided with no out of pocket cost to participants, truly a great opportunity to learn and upskill themselves.

“And above earning their certificate I white card, they are able to donate their work generously to someone in need!”

The course delivers the must-have safety knowledge and skills to work on construction sites right across Australia.

As well as an understanding safety at home with any DIY projects.

Great work team!
