Healthy Harmonies: singing to improve mental wellbeing
The many positive impacts that singing has on our physical and mental wellbeing are well-known and widely documented however more recently we’ve seen focus shift to the many added benefits of singing in a group setting.
Since the introduction of the Healthy Harmonies singing group, Townsville Mental Health Hub attendees have been experiencing these benefits first-hand … every Thursday at 1.30pm.
Mental Health Hub Coordinator, Rebecca Paterson, said the new group was a hit and those participating were making social connections, having fun and improving their mental wellbeing.
“The response so far for the Healthy Harmonies choir has been overwhelming and I have seen so much growth in participants in such a short time. So much so that the choir is already planning a Christmas concert,” said Rebecca.
“Choir singing people together to create important social connections and gives them the opportunity to express themselves in a safe and judgement-free setting.”
Peter (pictured), a Healthy Harmonies regular, said he had always enjoyed singing so when he found out the Mental Health Hub was adding the group to the program he signed up straight away.
“It’s a really good group, it’s good for me and my mental wellbeing and I want to keep going with it,” said Peter.
“I like how it is an open group. I would definitely recommend it to others.”
Healthy Harmonies is delivered in partnership with The Voice singing school.
The group meets weekly on Thursdays at 1.30pm – all welcome!
This group is for all skill levels - no musical experience is required!
