Innovative youth program finalist in mental health week awards
We are excited to announce that selectability’s Youth BikeShed program has been named a finalist in the prestigious 2024 Queensland Mental Health Week Achievement Awards under the Workplace Award: Community Wellbeing category. This recognition underscores the positive impact our program has in reducing youth crime, fostering social connection, and promoting mental health across regional Queensland.
Adding value to the community
The Youth BikeShed program is a community-driven initiative designed to support young people aged 10-24 by providing them with free access to bikes, repair workshops, and group rides. Through these activities, participants build vocational and life skills, enhance their self-confidence, and reduce antisocial behaviours by engaging in constructive activities.
At selectability, we are committed to improving mental wellbeing and preventing suicide across regional Queensland, and the Youth BikeShed serves as a cornerstone of this mission. The program’s goal is to provide practical skills and reduce isolation by creating a social hub where participants can connect with peers and mentors in a safe, supportive environment.
Supporting regional Queenslanders
Operating in centres like Townsville, Cairns, Mount Isa, and Rockhampton, the Youth BikeShed focuses on early intervention and prevention, addressing the issues that lead to social isolation and poor mental health outcomes. By giving young people a place to belong, we are helping to curb youth crime and contributing to the overall wellbeing of our communities.
The program is more than just about bikes—it’s about empowering youth with the tools they need to thrive. We are proud to partner with Queensland Health and local organisations to bring this initiative to life.
Join us in celebrating this achievement
We are incredibly proud of the Youth BikeShed and its recognition in the Queensland Mental Health Awards. This nomination highlights the hard work and dedication of our team, volunteers, and community partners. As we move forward, we remain committed to expanding this vital service and continuing to make a positive difference in the lives of young people across regional Queensland.
Want to support our mission? You can get involved by volunteering, donating bikes, or contributing funds. Together, we can build stronger communities and support the mental health of Queensland’s youth.
