Meet the team: Colleen Downie

Meet Coleen, one of our the group of 29 of Mackay’s newest recruits and Team Leader for one of our dedicated supported independent living homes.

Having worked in the disability sector for six years, Coleen has a background working in SIL homes having previously held the position of Team Leader in a group home with three consumers in the southern part of the state.

“Previously, I worked on a project to find a suitable property for another SIL house which I was successfully opened in 2018.

“After this I transferred to Brisbane and continued to work in SIL houses in the city’s north,” said Coleen.

As Team Leader SIL, Coleen heads up a team of Lifestyle Support Workers (LSWs) to ensure that the needs of employees and our SIL consumers are met.

 “From overseeing the intake process for new consumers, coordinating new NDIS referrals, leading and developing programs and services and monthly reporting …no two days are the same!

“Most importantly my role also sees me mentor and coach a team of LSWs to ensure that the services we are providing meet the specific needs of our consumers.”

Working in SILs can be challenging but also it is also extremely rewarding.

“Seeing smiles on the faces of our consumers and the small steps they make each day towards their goals shows us that we are making a difference in the lives of the people we support”
