Meet the team: Dylan Small
Meet Dylan - for the last 4 months he has been working with selectability in Cairns as a facilitated coach for the Carer Gateway program.
The Carer Gateway support unpaid carers to access free services such as counselling, coaching, group activities and respite.
As a facilitated coach, Dylan provides a one-to-one service supporting carers to move towards their own personal goals.
“A huge part of the role is to work with carers to reflect on how things are going and help them identify areas in their life where they might like to make some changes,” Dylan said.
The coaching support helps carers to acquire skills and resilience to help them sustain their caring role.
A role which Dylan believes fulfills his need to help others.
“I have a background in employment services and wanted to transition into a role that could help me grow professionally.
“I have always wanted to continue in a role which would allow me to help people & I was especially interested in the facilitated coach role.
“I've worked with several coaches to achieve my own goals in sport and nutrition, so I understand the value a committed, supportive person being in your corner can be.
“I have to say the best part is the team, hands down.
“I love the culture of supportiveness and inclusion I've seen so far, as well as the commitment everyone has to the mission of the Carer Gateway program.
Originally from Brisbane, Dylan has called Cairns home since he was 11, moving briefly to Emerald after high school, before returning to the north.
“In my spare time; for the most part I enjoy spending time with my partner, as well as watching, (and rating) terrible movies with my friends.
“I'm also involved with a local combat sports gym; Pretty Top Team; and have participated in several fights shows across boxing and muay Thai.
“I enjoy the challenge and discipline fighting brings - I am working on achieving my judging certifications in these sports as well.”
