Meet Melissa! Normanton local and regional manager of Kukatja Place, our residential aged care facility in the heart of the small town, made famous by the largest ever estuarine crocodile to be captured, 8.63 metres long!

As part of commitment to improving the lives of regional Queenslanders, late last year selectability took over management responsibility of 3 First Nations residential aged care facilities; Ngooderi House, Kukatja Place and Kuba Natha Hostel; in the Lower Gulf.

As a part of this delivery of service, Melissa is one of the 4 regional managers appointed to oversee the operations of the facilities.

“It is an absolute privilege to care for our community elders and journey with them and their families through this very precious stage of life,” said Melissa.

“I actually started my nursing journey in the Normanton aged care facility as an AIN while studying nursing.

“Once completed I worked at the Normanton hospital for a few years before moving to Townsville and growing my skills and experience in the large tertiary hospital there.”

Knowing her calling was always the bush, Melissa spent most of her career working as a nurse across different remote locations in the Gulf, Cape York, Kimberlys, Northern Territory and central Australia.

“I found my real stride in aged care, as a result and have worked in the field for number of years now … flying to some of Australia's remotes communities to work.

“I was raised in the bush, so it calls to me, while I do love the city it's only for short periods of time. I love the large open spaces that feel as though you have space to breathe.

“I also love the remote lifestyle as I am an avid photographer and love those gorgeous sun-kissed skies that are uncluttered by buildings and light pollution.

“I have had the absolute privilege of having quite a few of my photos curated and hung in art galleries all across the world.”

Melissa’s love for her job makes her an asset to selectability, and older persons in our care at Kukatja Place.

“I love the vibe and positivity of the organisation, it feels as though you are an important part of a larger picture that everyone is working towards.

“The energy and outlook of the company has me very excited for the future of the services here in our remote part of the world, as I deeply believe in what selectability is wanting to accomplish.

“The communities have needed a proactive organization to step in for such a long time, it's very exciting to be a part of that forward movement."
