Meet the team: Seamus Keane
Meet Seamus selectability Townsville’s Program Coordinator.
Seamus started with selectability as a Lifestyle Support Worker (LSW) in December 2021 and found his passion making a difference in the lives of others.
It is this passion teamed with his knowledge and experience that has seen him progress through the organisation to now lead the selectwellbeing team as Program Coordinator.
“When I came back to Townsville I found it hard to find a stable job – because of COVID. I was working in retail at the time and I had a lot of people around me who were working in the community services sector who suggested maybe I give that a try,” said Seamus.
“One of my close friends was working for selectability at the time and referred me through…I thought I’d be a great fit so I joined as a LSW in the selectwellbeing team.
Just over a month ago Seamus was successful in transitioning to the role of Program Coordinator, overseeing and coordination the selectwellbeing program in Townsville.
“I was approached about the role, I remember thinking initially do I have the right skills for that? … I’d only been with selectability for eight months.
“But I thought to myself if I’m not uncomfortable I’m not growing. And I love to see growth and change in myself and the people around me, so I accepted the role.
“Working initially as an LSW really gave me the understanding to help me in the role as Program Coordinator.”
selectwellbeing is a unique selectability-developed program funded by Queensland Health - it’s designed for consumers who may ineligible for NDIS or in the process of applying.
“The purpose of the program is to focus on promoting and maintaining independent living skills and increasing community access, all while assisting consumers to work towards a set of goals.
“Our main goal is to work with the consumer, if they choose, to transition them to the NDIS.
“At the end of the day if they are on the NDIS they have access to a lot more supports and a lot more doors open up for them.”
And although Seamus misses being an LSW he is “loving his new role”.
Many employees, like Seamus, have taken advantage of selectability’s internal career progression pathways!
