Meet the team: Shaylee Petersen
Meet Shaylee – she has been working as a facility support worker in Normanton, since selectability took over management responsibility for 3 residential aged care facilities in the Lower Gulf in September 2023.
Born and raised in the Normanton region, Shaylee has actually worked in the facility for the last 2 years with a previous provider, as a kitchen hand and as a cook.
“Now my main focus is things like cleaning, laundry and maintenance, it ends up being quite a lot of work at the end of the day,” Shaylee said.
“I really enjoy coming into work, and getting to do all different things is good as well.
The facility, known as ‘Kukatja Place’ holds 7 residents, all living in single units.
It’s attached to a main building with a full commercial kitchen, which provides daily meals to residents, and locals in the community through our meals on wheels service.
While it is remote, the small town of Normanton holds a lot of historical value in the cattle and gold industry, as well as being home to the iconic Gulflander rail link.
A fitting backdrop to a strong community, and for Shaylee, a rewarding job.
“Some days it can be hard to get things done as things might break, but I do enjoy what I do, if it's mowing, whipper snipping or things like laundry, stuff like that.
“For people that are wondering about jobs here, I would definitely tell them it’s great.
“But also, for people that want to try flying in and out, it is important to know the community and understands the remoteness, otherwise go for it!”
selectability believes that everyone has a right to high-quality support at every stage of their life and is committed to providing exceptional aged care services across the remote communities of Normanton, Mornington Island and Doomadgee.
It is people like Shaylee who are driven and determined in their extensive day to day, that continue to make positive impact in the lives of our older persons and work to deliver best practice support and services in the community.
