Meet the team: Simon McCarthy
Meet Simon, our Senior Support Coordinator based at selectability Mackay’s Mental Health Hub. He joined the team in March 2019.
Simon has a diverse background including working as an overhead line mechanic, fabricator and farm hand on a sheep and cattle farm before making the move to support work in 2015.
“I started as a support worker assisting people with disabilities, I have a caring nature so this transition made sense to me,” explained Simon.
“I don’t like seeing people suffer especially when there is no need in the modern society we live in today.”
In 2019 Simon applied for a role with selectability and hasn’t looked back.
“At selectability I worked for a year as a lifestyle support worker before moving into support coordination.
“I felt that I could do more within the sector to assist our NDIS consumers. I was supported through internal career pathways to transition roles and recently have been promoted to senior support coordinator.”
Simon’s day-to-day role includes assisting consumers with their plans and identifying services that align with their individual NDIS goals.
“Support coordinators engage with a range of stakeholders involved with providing supports and requirements being requested and also connect with community mental health services when consumers are case managed.
“We also assist with service agreements, ensuring that they fit with the funding the consumer has under their NDIS plan.”
Simon says one of the key traits to being successful as a support coordinator is communication.
“You need to be able to communicate with your peers and help assist them with their own skills to build a resilient team that supports each other.”
Simon, who is New Zealand born, encourages others to get involved in the sector that has helped him find his passion.
He offers the following insider tip for others considering a role as a support coordinator, “good communication with peer workers is a vital link as it gives good direction of following correct NDIS guidelines and working in line with a consumers goals.”
