Melissa gains confidence, learns new skills at BikeShed
For Mackay resident Melissa joining selectability’s BikeShed has been life changing ... she's taken the chance to learn a range of new skills including how to ride a bike!
Life Coach Natasha said it was amazing to see Melissa start peddling around at the BikeShed for the first time.
“We worked with Melissa to fix up a bike that she felt comfortable on and was the right size and style for her,” said Natasha.
“Once that was done Melissa spent the next few months practicing around the BikeShed each time she attended.
“She showed incredible dedication, and it was really special to see her riding around for the first time.”
Motivating others at both the Horizon Clubhouse and BikeShed Melissa said she was feeling very grateful.
“Being able to learn how to ride a bike has been great, I feel so grateful and happy!,” said Melissa.
“I’d always wanted to give it a go and see if I could do it…and I’m really proud that I can.”
After reaching her goal of learning how to ride a bike, Melissa recently joined her first group bike ride!
“I did have a few falls and hits with the rails, but I kept on going. I was determined to get back on my bike and keep riding.”
According to Natasha, Melissa had the biggest smile on her face throughout the ride!
With her success at the BikeShed Melissa is encouraging others in the community to come along and give it a try.
“The BikeShed has helped me a lot,” said Melissa.
“If I was having a bad day of there was something going on and I couldn’t get it out I would just come to the BikeShed, get on a bike and ride – riding gives me a distraction.
“It’s a really great place to hang out, the people there are really nice and I am learning a lot of new skills including how to take care and fix my bike if there is a problem.”
selectability’s BikeShed provides a safe and welcoming environment for people to socialise, learn new skills and improve their mental wellbeing.
Why not stop into the BikeShed at 11 Wood Street, meet the team, join a group ride or enjoy a coffee and meeting people who share similar interests?
