Mental Health Hub brings Nathan out of his shell
If asked not long ago, his friends would have described Nathan as a shy and reserved person - he even referred to himself as ‘stuck in a shell’, with his emotions all over the place and little control over his moods.
Finding himself in a downward emotional spiral, Nathan decided to seek support for his mental wellbeing … and he discovered the selectability’s Mental Health Hub.
After attending the Mental Health Hub for just four months, Nathan has transformed into a social and outgoing person.
“I have made new friends, become more active and learned new skills. I now invite my friends over for a coffee and go for regular walks.
“I have more control over my emotions and I am more self-confident. The Hub has supported me to try new things and step out of my comfort zone.”
The programs at the Mental Health Hub are recovery-oriented and include weekly activities like gardening, art, group fitness and social events.
“I expected the Mental Health Hub to be a one-off session, but to my surprise it turned out to be a structured program that I can attend regularly,” said Nathan.
Melissa Rake, Care Navigator at the Mental Health Hub said that the programs were designed to be flexible to the needs and interests of those attending.
“We offer activities that are suited to the interests and needs of the people seeking our support, it is fantastic to see members working together creatively to improve their wellbeing,” said Melissa.
Nathan said the Hub provided an environment where he felt safe to try new things and build his confidence.
“To me the Hub is a relaxing space where I can learn new skills and meet new people. I enjoy the gardening group and have learnt new skills like composting and mulching … I have even taught my mates about worm farming,” Nathan said
“Participating in group activities like Happy Feet and Rhythm to Recovery has made me feel more connected and inspired me to take up hobbies like drumming.”
