Moranbah: valuing community access and connection
Since opening its doors in 2023, selectability in Moranbah has continued to mature and expand its service delivery to meet the community's needs.
Most recently, this includes expanding into support coordination services, promoting social connections through group programs, and prioritizing consultation by regularly engaging with the local community.
Here’s how selectability in Moranbah has been kicking goals this past month!
Moranbah Clubhouse: Promoting Community Access
With the introduction of a brand-new van, consumers in Moranbah now have access to a wider range of outdoor activities and excursions.
Moranbah Regional Coordinator Kayla Sutton said this has opened new opportunities to help consumers achieve their goals.
“We know that one of the biggest barriers to community connection is access to transport. Our new van has really created new opportunities,” said Kayla.
“Things like our recent excursion to the Ballantyne Strawberry Farm or adding swimming to our weekly activity schedule.
"Or even our drum therapy sessions every Tuesday.
"It’s the best way to provide different opportunities for consumers to connect with the community while promoting a fulfilling and healthy lifestyle."
Consumers have been enjoying the group programs, with one consumer sharing:
“My experience at selectability has been great!
The staff are always so supportive and lovely. I’ve been able to get out, meet new people, and try a bunch of new things!”
Understanding Community Needs
Made possible through funding from the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance’s (BMA) Community Resilience Project, the Moranbah Mental Health Hub provides a central location for people across the region to access support, information, and a variety of services.
selectability is in the second year of its partnership, delivering a three-year project aimed at building community resilience, promoting mental health awareness, and improving help-seeking behavior and referral pathways within communities.
To deliver these services, the Moranbah team regularly engages with the local community to understand their needs and develop strong partnerships with other local groups.
“This month, in particular, we were able to collaborate with other local service providers for World Suicide Prevention Day and R U OK? Day,” said Kayla.
“These events helped break down stigma surrounding mental health and suicide in regional Queensland and gave us the chance to talk to locals about the services we provide in Moranbah."
This includes the newly launched support coordination services, designed to help consumers navigate the NDIS and interpret their individual packages, ensuring they get the most from their NDIS plans.
