More bikes for the Mackay community thanks to a generous donation!

Thanks to the generous donation from Horizon Clubhouse and Bike Shed member David, more refurbished bicycles will soon be hitting Mackay streets.

David had been buying old bikes and fixing them up for the last 10-15 years and had collected a lot of parts from the recyclers, but now that he spends more time involved in selectability's group activities, he decided to donate them to a good cause. 

“I’m not doing as much at home now, so I thought, why not donate the parts I had to the BikeShed,” said David.

“We have been refurbishing bikes (for both adults and children) to be donated back to community members in need.”

The 55-year-old Mackay local has been accessing a range of selectability services since late last year after his case manager recommended Horizon Clubhouse.

“She told me selectability was the best organisation to deal with, and I tend to agree,” said David.

“I’m glad I started coming here (Horizon Clubhouse and BikeShed). I’ve been getting out of my house and doing a lot of different things. I get to meet new people, talk to new people and help different people. The more I can help, the happier I am.”

David encourages anyone needing some support, a friendly face to chat with or just somewhere to go to socialise, to give the BikeShed or Clubhouse a try.

“My case manager told me about selectability and one day, I was walking past and thought, I’m going to go in and check it out.”

The parts that David generously donated will be used to help repair bikes to be donated back to the community to help people with exercise, travel and to stay connected to their community.

“It makes me happy that I can help people less fortunate than me. I am so happy and proud of myself.”

While David is open about his disabilities and mental health struggles he said he was “not worried about all that now, I am still here and I want to help as many people as I can.”
