Nathan comes full circle with selectability's support
After finding himself in a downward spiral about 18 months ago, former selectability consumer turned volunteer Nathan has come full circle on his recovery journey – landing himself a job as a security officer.
In 2020 Nathan started attending selectability Townsville's Mental Health Hub’s group programs.
“At the Hub I made new friends, became more active and learned new skills,” said Nathan.
“I also learned a lot about having control over my emotions which helped me improve my confidence.
“The team at the Hub supported me to try new things and step out of my comfort zone.
“I expected it to be a one-off session, but to my surprise it turned out to be a structured program I regularly attended.”
After attending group programs for just over a year, Nathan found a passion volunteering at selectability’s BikeShed and become an official volunteer in March 2022.
“After going through my journey and getting myself better I started volunteering at the BikeShed.
“It was great I really enjoyed working at the BikeShed, we were always doing something…fixing up bikes, repairing and putting together new bikes and giving bikes away.”
Soon after starting as a volunteer the Mental Health Hub ran a JobReady program and Nathan thought he would head along and get himself back into the workforce.
“I completed the course at the Hub, but I was very hesitant at first about getting a job.
“About two months after that I went into Workways and spoke to them about potentially getting some work as a security officer.”
He didn’t have to wait long with Workways contacting him the next day to let him know he was a good fit for local security team.
“Two weeks later I started the security course, and I had a proper interview as soon as the course finished.
“At the interview the company said I was successful in obtaining a job, I just needed to wait to get my official security licence sent through.”
And the best news is Nathan is loving his new career!
“It’s really great and the work is constant.
“I’ve been able to achieve a lot with the help of selectability, in particular Brett (BikeShed coordinator, Suz (counsellor) and Kody (facilitated coach) have been great."
