Nathan's story: from consumer to volunteer
Not that long ago, Nathan’s friends described him as a shy and reserved person – he often referred to himself as “stuck in his shell” – but meet Nathan today and you wouldn’t believe it’s the same person.
Around 12 months ago after finding himself in a downward emotional spiral, Nathan sought help for his mental wellbeing at selectability’s Townsville Mental Health Hub.
After attending group sessions for a large part of the year, Nathan has transformed into a social and outgoing person. So much so that he is now volunteering at selectability’s Bike Shed.
selectability Chief Executive Officer Debra Burden and Mental Health Hub Coordinator Rebecca Paterson recently presented Nathan with his official “selectability name badge” – and he could not wipe the smile off his face!
“I started with selectability as a consumer at the Mental Health Hub and after going through my journey and getting myself better I started volunteering at the Bike Shed,” explained Nathan.
Nathan has been volunteering at the Bike Shed for a few months now and says the experience is one he is really enjoying.
“It’s great! I really enjoy working at the Bike Shed. We are always doing something…fixing up bikes, repairing and putting together bikes and giving bikes away.
“I pretty much enjoy everything at the bike shed!”
