National Reconciliation Week: Be Brave. Make Change.
It’s National Reconciliation Week – a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
This year’s theme “Be Brave. Make Change” is a challenge to Individuals, families, communities, organisations and government to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.
selectability Chief Operating Officer, Aaron Farrell, said last year the organisation joined a network of more than 1100 corporate, government and not-for-profit organisations in making commitments through its Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).
“selectability fosters a workplace culture that respects and values the skills, experiences and wisdom of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees,” said Aaron.
“Our ‘Reflect’ RAP is the first step in our formal reconciliation journey and sets out the steps we will take to ensure culturally appropriate practices are embedded in all areas of our organisation.
"We look forward to working alongside our First Nation communities to develop and strengthen relationships."
Peer worker and proud Aboriginal and South Sea Island woman, Fallon Harris, is part of the working group to implement selectability’s RAP.
“Reconciliation is about education, learning our shared histories and cultures, and growing together,” said Fallon.
“Reconciliation Week is a chance for non-First Nations peoples to ask questions, to become more educated. This is the only way to achieve reconciliation.
“It’s great that selectability is committing to goals that are achievable and also going to have long lasting positive impacts … especially communities with larger populations of First Nations peoples.”
In selectability’s last employee engagement survey 14 per cent of employees identified as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
