New group program Rhythm2Recovery drumming launches at the Mental Health Hub

11 November 2021

More than any other instrument the drum has been used consistently across the decades to bring people together, assist with communication, to heal and improve social connection.

selectability’s Townsville Mental Health Hub is putting this into practice with the introduction of the group-based drumming program Rhythm2Recovery (R2R) to its activity schedule.

R2R taps into consumers emotions and – when combined with reflective discussion – is used as an effective alternative form of therapy.

Facilitator and senior peer worker, Mel Ashford said the fun and engaging drumming circle provides a safe, stress free environment for consumers to improve their social and emotional wellbeing.

“The rhythmic drumming helps encourage those involved to build their confidence and resilience which helps to improve their mental wellbeing,” said Mel.

“The drum brings people together, and we use it in the group setting to assist communication. We use the drums to talk – rather than using words which can be really helpful.

“The rhythm of the drum is reminiscent of a heart beat – a steady constant.

Throughout the session we do a lot of activities which work to show consumers that no matter the situation you can always ground yourself by coming back to the constant.”

Rhythm2Recovery is held every Friday from 1.30pm to 3pm at the Townsville Mental Health Hub – 59a Cambridge Street, Vincent.  You don’t need any musical skills to attend, just a willingness to participate and have fun. (*Bookings are essential)
