Ngooderi House celebrates NAIDOC Week 2024: Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud

16 July 2024

Each July, NAIDOC Week unites Australians to honor the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year’s theme, ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’, provided an opportunity for older persons in our care, their families and our employees to recognise the enduring impact and legacy of the world's oldest continuous living cultures.

At Ngooderi House in Doomadgee, NAIDOC Week was marked by a series of vibrant activities, supported by a grant from the Queensland Government and the Department of Treaty, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships.

The festivities kicked off with a community march through Doomadgee's main street, led by Elder Clarence Walden, whose powerful speech set the tone for the week. The community then enjoyed a traditional Corroboree.

At Ngooderi House, attendees gathered for a welcoming BBQ lunch, fostering connections between elders, community members, and employees. The group also visited the church next door to view video stories of Doomadgee.

Reflecting on selectability's stewardship since September 2023, Helen Paris, Regional Manager of Doomadgee, emphasised the significance of this NAIDOC Week.

"This year has been particularly special for us,” said Helen.

“Seeing the active participation of our older persons in care alongside their families and broader community embodies the inclusivity and sense of belonging we try to cultivate here.”

As the sun set on Wednesday afternoon, Bottoms Park hosted novelty games and night markets, including a spirited tug-o-war competition between the aged care team and community members.

The week culminated with a special Elders lunch held at the 54 Reasons Childrens Centre followed by an award ceremony and NAIDOC feast in the evening at the Sport and Recreation Centre. selectability employees supported older persons in our care to attend both events, ensuring everyone could enjoy the celebration.

“It was a memorable occasion as all residents attended all of these events for the first time ever.

“The positive feedback from our older persons and the community was truly humbling and heartwarming,” said Helen.
