Perinatal Mental Health Week: supporting mothers, families, and communities

19 November 2024

Perinatal Mental Health Week, running from 17 to 23 November 2024, is a national initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the mental health challenges expectant and new parents face. The week reminds us of the importance of supporting families during the perinatal period—the time spanning pregnancy through the first year after birth.

Understanding perinatal mental health

The transition into parenthood can be both joyous and challenging. In Australia, approximately one in five new mothers and one in ten new fathers experience perinatal depression and anxiety, affecting around 100,000 parents each year. These conditions can impact parent-infant bonding, family relationships, and the overall wellbeing of both parents and children.

This year’s themes

Perinatal Mental Health Week 2024 focuses on daily themes to highlight various aspects of perinatal mental health:

  • Day 1 (17 November): Trauma-informed care
  • Day 2 (18 November): Wrap-around care
  • Day 3 (19 November): Pregnancy loss
  • Day 4 (20 November): Parenting with disability
  • Day 5 (21 November): Multicultural families
  • Day 6 (22 November): Young mums
  • Day 7 (23 November): Fathers and peer support

These themes foster understanding and provide targeted support to diverse groups within the community.

Getting involved

Community involvement is crucial in supporting perinatal mental health. Here are ways you can contribute:

  • Start conversations: Ask new and expectant parents how they are feeling and listen without judgment.
  • Share resources: Distribute information about perinatal mental health services available in your area.
  • Participate in events: Engage in local activities during perinatal mental health week to show your support.
