selectability officially opens new Rockhampton Mental Health Hub

13 February 2025

Rockhampton residents can now access a range of vital mental health and wellbeing support in one central location, as local not-for-profit charity, selectability, officially opens the doors to its new purpose-built facility this Wednesday (12 February 2025).

The Mental Health Hub, the first of its kind in the region, was made possible through a $3.1M grant from the Resources Community Infrastructure Fund*.

Queensland Resources Council CEO, Janette Hewson, said the new hub was based in the heart of one of Queensland’s major resources regions and congratulated selectability on the opening and achieving this major milestone.

“The Queensland resources sector is extremely proud of its contributions to regional communities that extends well beyond jobs and economic benefits,” Ms Hewson said.

“It’s wonderful to see this funding used for such an important project as the Mental Health Hub that’s been driven by the passion and dedication of the people at selectability and will provide a crucial service to Central Queenslanders.

“Mental health affects Queenslanders of all walks of life and backgrounds, including resources workers.

“ Through selectability’s work and with the financial backing of the Queensland resources sector, the people of this region will have access to first class support services.”

Representing Deputy Premier, Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning and Minister for Industrial Relations member for Rockhampton, Donna Kirkland MP said the Queensland Government was proud to support this vital service and give back to our resources communities through the Resources Community Infrastructure Fund.

“Our resources communities work hard for the benefit of all Queenslanders,” Ms Kirkland said.

“That’s why it is so important to give back to organisations like selectability, which support the most vulnerable members of our community.”

selectability Chief Executive Officer, Debra Burden said the facility provided a safe, shared space for the general public to access support for mental health and general wellbeing challenges.

“Before we started this project, we consulted with key stakeholders across the region to understand the types of services required to support the diverse needs of this region,” Ms Burden said.

“We found that there was a large unmet need for community mental wellbeing and suicide prevention services.

“More than 90 per cent of respondents to our survey said there was an urgent need for a dedicated mental wellbeing facility.”

“We were thrilled to receive the generous support from the Resource Community Infrastructure Fund.

“With a $1.1M contribution from selectability we have delivered on our commitment to regional Queenslanders, ensuring they have access to high-quality mental health services locally.’

The new Mental Health Hub features open activity areas for group programs, consulting rooms, a commercial kitchen and a large outdoor space.
