2021 – that’s a wrap!

It has been a year of opportunity, growth and development as selectability continues to find new and innovative ways to improve the mental wellbeing of regional Queenslanders and contribute to suicide prevention.

Engaging with communities, identifying service gaps and responding to unmet needs has seen us add new programs, move into new regions and establish fit-for-purpose facilities in existing locations.

We continue to expand our affordable accommodation and NDIS supported independent living offerings with dedicated facilities in Townsville, Cairns, Charters Towers, Mackay and Mount Isa. After being approached by the state government, we now provide Child Safety services, offering safe and appropriate accommodation for those under 18 and put in place support frame works to meet developmental needs.

Community demand has seen us establish Mental Health Hubs in Rockhampton and Ingham and launch new fit-for-purpose facilities in Mount Isa and Cairns. This growth will continue well into the new year when we will officially open Mental Health Hubs in Bowen, Ayr and Longreach.

Our service innovation is well-demonstrated through the development of new platforms for regional Queenslanders to connect and improve their wellbeing. This includes the Real Mates Talk online suicide prevention campaign; the Well Man app; our podcast series Talking Mental Health; along with the use of telehealth to deliver counselling and therapeutic services.

Over the last 12 months selectability has successfully expanded its services in response to consumer and community need - this being made possible by the increased funding and support from the NDIS, NQPHN, WQPHN, OURPHN (covering Central Queensland, Wide Bay and Sunshine Coast) and the commonwealth and state governments.

selectability Rockhampton receives $3.1M for new facility

As one of the fifteen resources communities to share in almost $50M, selectability has secured $3.1M to establish the Rockhampton Mental Wellbeing Safe Haven.

The Safe Haven will further strengthen the health and resilience of the community by providing a range of mental health services.

The Resources Community Infrastructure Fund (RCIF) is a joint Queensland Government and resources sector initiative.

selectability receives $808k to transform Caledonian Hall, Ayr

selectability is delighted to be establishing a presence in Ayr and to transform the currently disused Caledonian Hall ("Hornets Rugby League Clubhouse" to many) into a community Mental Health Hub.

The Burdekin Mental Health Hub will become a central location for those across the region to connect and link to vital mental wellbeing support and services.

This redevelopment is part of the Queensland Government's Community Infrastructure Investment Partnership.


selectability opens four new locations in 2021!


selectability announced winner of Queensland Mental Health Week Award

During Mental Health Week selectability was announced as winner of the large not-for-profit category in this year’s Queensland Mental Health Week Achievement Awards.

The awards, recognise and celebrate the achievements of individuals, groups and organisations working tirelessly to reduce stigma and support and empower those living with mental illness.


The selectability board of directors, chaired by Tom Ryan, provided the strategic direction and shared commitment to improving the mental wellbeing of regional Queenslanders and contributing to suicide prevention that allowed the organisation to achieve so much in 2021.

This year Dr Clive Skarott was honoured at an event and his many achievements, not only in driving selectability’s growth but to the Cairns region in general, were showcased in a documentary aired at the event – you can watch the video HERE.


selectability is fortunate to have an extraordinary group of people committed to improving mental wellbeing and reducing suicide regional Queensland.

Starting 2021 with 350 employees we have seen this number increase to almost 500 as the year draws to a close.

Our annual Employee engagement survey conducted by Best Practice Australia in July 2021 again provided invaluable feedback. Energy levels and morale are high, with 87% of our employees rating selectability as a "truly great place to work."


selectability wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We thank all of our consumers, employees and stakeholders for their continued support throughout 2021, and we look forward to the challenges that await us in 2022.
