selectability reminds victims of crime that support is available
With crime rates remaining high across the region, selectability, is reminding Townsville victims that free support is available.
selectability’s unique victim support program, developed in consultation with Queensland Police Service, is specifically targeted at those impacted by property crimes such as burglary, break and enter, motor vehicle theft or witnesses to critical incidents.
selectability counsellor Suzanne Bocking said in the nine months since the program started they had received more than 160 referrals to support Townsville residents to recover from their traumatic experiences.
“After becoming a victim of crime or witness to a critical incident people can be hesitant to reach out for help or may not realise the impacts until long after the situation has occurred,” said Suzanne.
“The program can help individuals understand the signs of post-traumatic stress while learning strategies to improve their own mental wellbeing.”
The free program is delivered in two parts – four structured group sessions to help individuals build resilience, supported by one-on-one counselling. It’s flexible so depending on their needs an individual may choose one or both options.
“In our one-on-one counselling sessions people have the opportunity to process what has happened.
“The main aim is to get people back to what they were enjoying before the incident – focusing on sleep, diet and lifestyle.
“Those who have participated in the program have been achieving substantial improvements in their wellbeing.
“One participant was extremely anxious, not sleeping well and unable to go to the shops.
“We worked together in a group setting and then in counselling - after just three sessions they were back to feeling completely like themselves.
“Trauma presents itself differently in different situations and it can creep up on us.
“If anyone is in need of support, reach out to us today. Our program is free and it doesn’t matter how long ago the crime or incident occurred. Help is available.”
Anyone can self-refer into the victim support program – simply call the selectability Mental Health Hub team or drop-in and complete an intake form.
