selectability Training helps Support Coordinator Saranne grow in role

From moving regional cities, to working in a new industry and fast-tracking the completion of her diploma,  2020 was a year of change  for selectability Support Coordinator Saranne Maule…and this was all against the backdrop of a global pandemic!

In January 2020 Saranne, who has a background in aged care and beauty therapy, moved from Toowoomba to Townsville with her family. However the fallout from the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic left her struggling to find work and considering her options.

Saranne said saw a Customer Service Officer role advertised within selectability Townsville and applied.

“I am open to trying new things so I submitted my application and was successful in securing an interview.”

It seems the interview panel had other ideas for Saranne as she was invited back for a second interview…this time for the role of Support Coordinator! 

“Back in the UK I had studied a Diploma of Psychology and I think the skills and knowledge I had form this helped me during the interview process,” said Saranne.

“I accepted the role but there was a lot of new stuff to take in and learn – I was keen to further my knowledge in this area so decided to formalise it with a Diploma of Community Services through selectability Training.”

Generally taking around 12 months to complete, Saranne finished her studies in just 105 days!

“I got through the course very quickly - working in the industry while studying helped me to become better at my job.

“I committed to a couple of hours study in the morning and evening and it has really paid off.

“Not only do I feel better equipped to support the consumers I work with, I was able to progress awards levels and receive a pay rise.

“The course really helped me to grasp the role and it was very relatable to my job.”

Saranne explains that the course was very easy to follow and once she started to see the green completed ticks fill up on her online portal was motivation to keep studying.

“I completed every unit without extra help, all the information I needed was provided to me.

“In particular I found the consumer-based studies so helpful. They helped me related the scenarios in the course to situations that I had already come across.”

Wondering what exactly a Support Coordinator does?

Well we asked Saranne to give us a rundown of her role.

Support coordinators help consumers better understand the NDIS and the services and support available to get them closer to their goals. 

“We also help consumers to strengthen their existing support networks and prepare for their plan review. Most importantly we help our consumers to get the most out of the funding in their NDIS plans.

“I love my job its brilliant, no two days are the same,” Saranne explains.
