Shane gets closer to his goals with the support of selectability Ingham

Life for Ingham local and avid Cowboys supporter, Shane hasn’t always been easy but with determination along with support from selectability  his mental wellbeing is improving as he progresses towards his goals…including attending his first NRL game!

As Regional Coordinator Deborah Camp tells us, selectability has been able to support Shane with his NDIS goal accessing and engaging with his community.

“Shane wants to increase community activity and get involved with things where he can meet and interact with people.”

As an avid rugby league fan and supporter of the North Queensland Cowboys one of Shane’s more recent goals was to attend his very first game!

Not only did he get to watch the Cowboys take on the Illawarra Dragons on 20 March at the new Queensland Country Bank Stadium he has since been back to see a second game.

“I actually had my first social outing four weeks ago, I went to a football match,” said Shane.

“That was the first game I’d been to in my whole life.”

Shane who suffers from chronic back pain, post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety was one of the first consumers to seek support through selectability’s new Mental Health Hub in Ingham.

“I was one of the first people to join up to selectability, it’s going pretty good. My new support worker is really good and I’m getting out a bit more.

“I’ve suffered from chronic back pain and PTSD all my life…since childhood. It impacted my whole life as a child growing up and as an adult it stopped me from doing things I wanted to.

 “Like going to a café for a coffee or to a movie, I could never do that before. I suffer high anxiety in groups of people. But now (with support) I’m getting out a bit more, which has made me feel more in contact with society.”

Since starting with selectability Deborah tells us that she has noticed Shane growing in his ability and confidence, to consider and attend events that he would not of in the past.

“My life’s slowly opening up,” says Shane.
