The impact of housing insecurity on mental health and homelessness in regional Queensland

23 July 2024

Addressing the intersection of housing insecurity, mental health challenges, and homelessness in regional Queensland is a critical priority for selectability. We believe that everyone deserves a place to call home that is affordable, sustainable, safe and secure.

Sadly, we see firsthand how inadequate housing contributes to mental illness and perpetuates a cycle of homelessness, particularly affecting Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander communities facing systemic inequalities.

Recent data revealed homelessness in Queensland has risen by 22% since 2017, surpassing the national increase. Regional areas bear the brunt of this crisis, with a 29% rise in demand for specialist homelessness services over five years. This surge strains local resources and budgets, increasing pressure on emergency, social, and healthcare services.

selectability has seen a rise in the number of consumers at risk of homelessness and we work with our consumers to increase their capacity and address factors that can contribute to housing problems.

We work with our consumers to tailor group programs around topics and activities that will deliver practical solutions. These include financial management, healthy cooking on a budget, and maintaining a tenancy.

The link between housing instability and mental health is undeniable - homelessness is often a result of mental illness and a cause of it. Anxiety, depression, and trauma are common consequences of homelessness and precarious living conditions. For individuals already managing mental health issues, stable housing is crucial for recovery and accessing essential healthcare.

Our goal to become a federally licensed community-housing provider highlights our commitment to expanding stable accommodation options beyond NDIS-supported services.

To achieve this, we know collaboration is key. By participating in events like the recent Homeless Expo in Mackay, hosted by CASA, we strengthen partnerships with local community services. These connections enable us to better understand local needs and tailor our supports to ensure they are effective and accessible.

By offering a lifeline to those at risk of homelessness, providing stability and a foundation for improved mental wellbeing, we aim to make a meaningful difference in the lives of regional Queenslanders, fostering independence and resilience within our communities.
