The link between culture and wellbeing

19 March 2024

In recent years, there has been an increase in understanding of the relationship between culture and mental health. While mental health issues can impact everyone, understanding the unique role of cultural diversity on a person's identity and barriers to seeking help is crucial to supporting regional Queenslanders from diverse backgrounds.

Cultural identity and mental wellbeing

Recognising, acknowledging, and celebrating cultural identity is fundamental to wellbeing. For people from culturally diverse backgrounds, maintaining connections to their heritage, language, and traditions can contribute positively to their mental wellbeing and sense of belonging.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) reports that cultural identity plays an important role in shaping mental health outcomes among First Nations people. Cultural connections to land, community, and traditional practices are closely linked to positive mental health. Recognising, respecting, and embracing First Nations cultural practices and knowledge are crucial steps toward addressing mental health support in regional communities.

Access to mental health services

Individuals from culturally diverse backgrounds often face barriers to accessing mental health services. Language barriers, stigma around mental illness, and a lack of culturally sensitive care can stop people from seeking help and support when needed.

By incorporating cultural awareness training for mental health professionals and providing services in many languages, healthcare providers can create more inclusive and accessible options for care.

Considering culture in treatment

Effective mental health support must be sensitive to the culture in which people live. What may be considered an appropriate treatment for one person may not be suitable for another based on cultural context. Mental health providers must adopt culturally sensitive approaches that reflect the beliefs, values, and needs of their consumers.

In collaboration with community leaders and organisations, culturally appropriate mental health initiatives can be tailored to make an impact on diverse cultural groups and foster better engagement and participation.

Focus on strengths

A strengths based approach to mental health acknowledges the resilience and coping skills within cultural communities. This approach highlights the unique strengths and resources that people can draw upon to navigate mental health challenges. Empowering people to use their cultural assets in the process of healing and recovery, can lead to better mental health outcomes.

Mental health programs, providers, and individuals that embrace cultural identity, address barriers to health care access, and adopt strengths-based interventions, are working towards creating more inclusive and equitable mental health care. It is crucial to listen to the voices of Queensland’s diverse regional communities in tailoring support and services. This approach will enable a future where everyone, regardless of cultural background, is empowered to access the appropriate support and resources needed to achieve wellbeing.
