The transformative power of creativity on mental health and wellbeing

23 April 2024

From poetry and storytelling to singing, sewing, and arts and crafts, the benefits of creativity on our mental wellbeing are widely recognised. Artistic expression forms the foundation of many of selectability's group programs, highlighting the profound impact that creativity can have on enhancing our mental health and overall wellbeing.

selectability delivers programs across our footprint that are tailored to the needs and interests of those attending … and not surprisingly all regions offer activities that allow our consumers to explore their creative side.

As Townsville’s mental health hub coordinator, Jackie Inwood, explains creative expression provides selectability consumers with a platform for self-discovery, allowing individuals to explore their thoughts, feelings, and identities.

“When we design our programs we work with consumers to understand their interests and add activities that will allow them to engage in hands-on projects while building social connections, listening to others and developing empathy,” said Jackie.

“Participating in group creative activities like art projects, cooking classes, workshops, or performances can foster a sense of belonging, provide an emotional outlet, and  give you a sense of achievement.”

One of the most immediate benefits of creative activities is stress reduction. According to a study by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), participating in creative pursuits can lower cortisol levels - the hormone associated with stress.

Whether it's painting, writing, or crafting, immersing yourself in a creative task can help shift your focus away from concerns and induce a state of flow, where you become fully absorbed in the activity.

“Engaging in creative activities stimulates the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward, which can elevate your mood and foster a sense of accomplishment,” said Jackie.

"It could be painting a canvas, writing a poem, or dancing to their favourite song - creative expression allows our consumers to communicate their innermost thoughts and emotions, fostering a deeper understanding and acceptance of themselves."

Jackie noted that creativity is a powerful tool to connect consumers to peers and community.

“The Townsville Mental Health Hub offers a range of group creative activities such as karaoke, art, newsletter writing,, cooking classes, sewing and weaving, and we have seen first-hand the positive impacts engagement in these activities has had on our consumers,” said Jackie.

Bringing consumers together through tailored programs and activities is part of the unique approach  of selectability's Mental health Hubs and Clubhouses to improving mental wellbeing.

Embrace your creative side for better wellbeing

Creativity can offer myriad benefits for mental health and wellbeing. As highlighted above, integrating creative activities into your daily life can have a transformative effect on your mental health.

So, why not pick up a paintbrush, write a story, or dance to your favourite song, let your creativity flow and experience the benefits it brings. Creativity knows no bounds, and the possibilities are endless!
