Townsville BikeShed reopens ...offering more than just bikes

28 November 2024

selectability's Townsville BikeShed is back and better than ever! selectability has officially reopened its doors with exciting new additions aimed at helping locals connect, learn new skills, and improve their wellbeing.

While the BikeShed has always been a go-to spot for bike enthusiasts of all levels, the revitalised space is about much more than just bikes.

The new program features a gardening group where green thumbs can come together to come together and grow their own plants, as well as opportunities to engage in other hands-on projects. selectability has plans to  re-introduce chickens to the garden area soon, adding another element of fun and education for visitors.

GM Townsville, Ryan Wiggins said the focus was on creating a welcoming environment where people of all backgrounds and abilities can connect with others, make new friends, and break the cycle of loneliness that affects so many in the community.

"We're excited to offer a safe, inclusive space where people can not only enjoy bike riding but also learn valuable skills that support their mental and physical health," said Ryan.

“Whether you're interested in cycling, gardening, or simply enjoying the company of others, there’s something here for everyone.

The BikeShed isn’t just for those with bikes, though – it’s for everyone. selectability is proud to provide a variety of programs for people with NDIS plans, with tailored support available for individuals looking to explore the BikeShed's activities. But it doesn’t stop there. For those who are not on the NDIS, funding is also available.

"We believe that community involvement is key to overcoming isolation and loneliness," said Ryan.

"At the BikeShed, people can build skills, make lasting friendships, and contribute to something bigger than themselves, all while having fun."

All are welcome to join, whether you are an experienced rider, a gardening enthusiast, or someone simply looking for a friendly place to connect.

Throughout December and January the team will be running Garden Group – from 10am – 12pm on Mondays and Wednesdays and Bike Workshops from 9.00am – 12.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The BikeShed is located at 69 Charles St, Aitkenvale
