Townsville crisis support service open over the festive season
Access mental health support over the festive season can be challenging, with many services closing over Christmas and New Year, however, there is a new space Townsville filling this gap.
'Wadda Mooli', the Crisis Support Space located within the Townsville University Hospital offers a safe place for those presenting to the emergency department in emotional distress or crisis and provides the opportunity to connect with peer workers, have a chat and develop a support plan.
selectability Program Coordinator (Crisis Support Space) Eliza Meldrum is reminding those in the Townsville community that the space will remain open over the festive season.
“Wadda Mooli will be opening Wednesday to Sunday from 2pm to 10pm over Christmas and New Year,” said Eliza.
“Often people experiencing crisis are admitted to the Emergency Department (ED), but we know a busy clinical space can be overwhelming for someone in distress.
The aim of Wadda Mooli is to ensure that those seeking support have a warm, welcoming and inclusive space that is a non-clinical alternative to the ED.
“If you are struggling and feeling alone, you can reach out and talk to one of the peer workers within the space.
“Peer workers are people who have had their own experience of distress and use lessons learnt to support others in times of crisis.
They will listen to you without judgement, share how they got through their own challenges and provide strategies on how to reduce stress and anxiety,” explained Eliza.
“While you’re speaking with a peer worker, you can sit down with a cuppa, have a chat, and feel safe and supported.”
