Townsville University Hospital crisis support service: festive season operating hours
The festive season can be a particularly tough time for many, and with some services closing during the holiday break, finding support can feel overwhelming.
The team at Townsville’s Wadda Mooli – The Welcome Space wants to remind the community that their doors will remain open every day (excluding Christmas day) throughout the holiday period.
Through a partnership between selectability and the Townsville Hospital and Health Service, Wadda Mooli provides urgent non-clinical support for people presenting to the Townsville University Hospital emergency department (ED) in emotional distress and crisis.
selectability program coordinator Brylee Staples says the space is staffed by 2 peer workers during opening hours, with support from a mental health clinician.
“We are really proud to provide a warm and welcoming space away from the stressful environment of ED, particularly during the festive season which can be a difficult time for some,” Brylee said.
“Our dedicated peer workers use their own lived/living experience of mental health to support others during times of crisis.
“This includes sharing helpful techniques to manage stress and anxiety, offering information on local services, and working together to create a practical support plan.
“Visitors can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, take a moment to relax in the massage chair, and find solace in the peaceful surroundings.
“Through conversations with our peer workers, visitors are supported to feel empowered, knowing they are not alone and that there is hope.
“Our team also helps individuals outline clear next steps and connect with longer-term support services within the community.
Whether you choose to speak to a peer worker, share your experience, are looking for resources or just need a quiet time to reflect, our team are here to listen with compassion and without judgment.”
Wadda Mooli – The Welcome Space is open over the festive season (excluding Christmas day) - weekdays from 12:45pm – 9:30pm and weekends 12:00pm - 9:30pm.
Please call 4433 3912 to confirm the availability of the service. If you are in the ED, a staff member will be able to assist you to access the service.
