World Health Day 2024: Ensuring Health for All

5 April 2024

As the world grapples with various health challenges, from diseases to conflicts to environmental crises, the importance of prioritising universal access to quality health services becomes increasingly evident.

This World Health Day, themed ‘My health, my right’ champions the right of every individual to access quality health supports, education, and information, as well as safe drinking water, clean air, good nutrition, quality housing, decent working and environmental conditions, and freedom from discrimination.

Despite the recognition of health as a human right by numerous countries, millions around the globe still lack adequate access to essential health services.

While initiatives like the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) aim to provide assistance, there are still many Australians living with psychosocial disabilities who are missing out on vital support.

The episodic nature of psychosocial disabilities and the concept of personal recovery, as defined by the World Health Organization, highlight the need for holistic and community-focused approaches to mental health care.

“For many people recovery is about regaining control of their identity and life, having hope for their life, and living a life that has meaning for them whether that be through work, relationships, spirituality, community engagement or some or all of these.” – World Health Organization.

Unfortunately, the fragmented nature of mental health and disability services exacerbates the challenges faced by individuals seeking comprehensive support. Despite substantial investments in the NDIS, there remains a considerable shortfall in funding for psychosocial supports outside the scheme.

This deficit leaves thousands of individuals without access to vital services, including community participation assistance, accommodation support, and mental health interventions. The implications of these gaps are particularly severe for young people with complex mental health needs.

Addressing these systemic shortcomings requires a concerted effort from policymakers, healthcare providers, and community organisations. It requires a shift towards a more inclusive and integrated approach to mental health and disability services, one that prioritises early intervention, community engagement, and ongoing support.

On World Health Day 2024, we are committed to health equity and social justice. By advocating for the rights of all individuals to access quality healthcare and support services, we can strive towards a healthier, more inclusive future for generations to come.
