World Suicide Prevention Day: take action, save lives
This World Suicide Prevention Day selectability is calling on regional Queenslanders to take meaningful action to save lives.
selectability is throwing its support behind Suicide Prevention Australia’s “we all have a role to play” campaign and asking the community to come together to promote stigma reduction, advocate for policy change, and encourage help seeking.
selectability CEO, Debra Burden, said raising awareness, challenging stigma, and educating our communities was integral to preventing suicide.
“Certain life events and factors can make people more vulnerable to suicide and these are times when as individuals and communities we can take action,” said Ms Burden.
“We can do simple things like support family and friends when they are experiencing major life events, check in with colleagues who are struggling or welcome new neighbours to the street.
“While there is no single solution that will prevent it, we know that there are many protective factors that can reduce the risk of suicide.
In 2023, Queensland recorded 782 suspected suicide deaths – with males accounting for three-quarters of these.
“Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy and the impacts are significant and far-reaching,” said Ms Burden.
“We need to work together to create a more resilient community where everyone feels supported and connected.
“You don’t need to be a doctor or psychologist to check-in with someone you’re worried about.
“If a person you know seems to be struggling, reach out and connect with them. It could save their life.”
World Suicide Prevention Day, observed on 10 September each year, is an international awareness day to provide a focus on commitment and action to prevent suicide.
